Suigetsugama is a kiln that was opened in 1946 in Kokeizan, Tajimi by Living National Treasure Arakawa Toyozo (1894-1985). From its inception through the present day, Arakawa and his two sons were at its center, preserving the production of traditional ceramics with all the steps performed by hand. As the only kiln to produce traditional Mino ceramics, Suigetsugama was declared an intangible cultural asset of Tajimi City in February of 2010.
In 1930, Arakawa Toyozo discovered a shard of Shino pottery with a bamboo-shoot motif at the Mutabora kiln in Ogaya, Kani. After that, in 1933 he built a kiln at the Mutabora site, where he sought to recreate Momoyama ceramics such as Shino, Setoguro, and Kizeto. On the other hand, separate from the kiln at Mutabora, also built the Suigetsugama kiln with the idea of making use of the Mino tradition to also create ceramic ware for ordinary households.
In this kiln, Arakawa was able to produce ceramic glazes, such as Sometsuke, Kohiki, and Akae, which could not be fired in the Mutabora kiln.
