This finely carved white jade ornament is believed to date from the Qing dynasty (1644–1912), based on both stylistic features and material characteristics. It is crafted from high-quality Hetian (Hotan) white jade, known for its soft, milky translucence and smooth luster. The piece portrays a mythical beast—likely a bixie or qilin—reclining with a cub on its back, an auspicious motif symbolizing protection, fertility, and lineage. The rounded contours, delicate incised lines, and balanced composition reflect the sophistication of 18th-century jade artistry, particularly from imperial workshops. A small perforation running through the body suggests it was used as a toggle or pendant. Its surface displays a natural patina, with minor inclusions and speckling consistent with aging and genuine nephrite. These features support the attribution to the Qing dynasty, and the work exemplifies the elegance and symbolic depth of Chinese jade carvings from that period.
