Note: This piece was purchased by a Japanese professor between 1973 and 1990 from cultural relic stores and antique markets across various regions of China for research and collection purposes. The vase has two printed Chinese labels, indicating that it was previously housed in a Chinese collection.
This flower vase was crafted during the Song Dynasty at the Longquan Kiln, and it is considered one of the most outstanding examples of Longquan celadon ware. The evenly applied celadon glaze, with its serene bluish-green hue, is characteristic of Longquan's distinctive and profound color palette. This glaze, created through high-temperature firing, exudes a warm transparency that has captivated admirers across the ages.
The surface's craze was naturally formed due to the differing contraction rates between the glaze and the clay during the firing process, a hallmark feature of Longquan ware from this period. Over time, these cracks have developed a patina, lending the piece an air of antiquity that is now regarded as an essential characteristic of classical ceramics.
Additionally, the vase's body is adorned with a three-dimensional dragon motif, showcasing the extraordinary skill of Longquan craftsmen. In Chinese culture, the dragon symbolizes prosperity and strength, and the inclusion of such motifs suggests that this vase was a special item crafted for the aristocracy or upper class of the time.
The overall design exhibits impeccable balance, with a smooth, flowing line that connects the shoulder to the body and the base, demonstrating both functionality and artistry. The wide mouth rim enhances its stability, making it a practical yet elegant design for holding flowers.
As for its condition, while minor signs of aging are evident, there are no significant cracks or chips, and the glaze remains vibrant and well-preserved. The craquelure contains natural discoloration and patina, which are appreciated as elements of its historical character. Overall, the vase is in excellent condition, making it an exceptional item for display or collection.
