This black Raku chawan dates back to the mid-Edo period (17th century) and is attributed to Raku 6th Sanyu. The bowl is entirely covered in a lustrous black glaze that radiates both depth and tranquility—an embodiment of the ethereal beauty prized in the Japanese tea ceremony. The glaze has a finely textured surface, offering a tactile experience that complements its visual elegance. The slightly undulating rim adds a touch of organic imperfection, endowing the bowl with warmth and individuality. The robust foot is clearly formed, and the underside bears a distinct seal mark indicative of its Raku heritage. Inside, the pooling of glaze creates subtle plays of light, reflecting the tea’s surface in a way that enhances the moment of use. The bowl remains in excellent condition with no chips or cracks, retaining its dignified presence as a passed-down piece. Among black Raku wares, this example attributed to Sōnyū stands out as both a highly collectible and functional vessel, conveying the essence of Japanese tea ceramics.
