This sake cup (guinomi) was fired during the mid-Edo period. Oribe ware, known for its unique aesthetic sense, emerged during the flourishing tea culture from the Azuchi-Momoyama period to the Edo period. The greatest appeal of Oribe ware lies in its bold and free design. Geometric patterns and abstract motifs inspired by nature reflect the aesthetic sensibilities of the time. This guinomi also showcases a vivid contrast between the green glaze and the unglazed portions, with dynamic brushwork that evokes the beauty of "wabi-sabi" (the Japanese aesthetic of imperfection and transience).
During the mid-Edo period, Oribe ware was especially prized by samurai and tea masters, widely used as tea ceremony utensils. It is likely that this guinomi was used during tea gatherings to enjoy sake, adding a refined touch to the event.
