This is a Shino ware sake cup (guinomi) fired during the mid-Edo period. Shino ware, which developed in the Mino region during the Momoyama period, was highly valued alongside the tea culture, especially for its warm, white glaze and soft, gentle atmosphere.
The greatest charm of this guinomi lies in its soft texture and the unique crackling (kannyu) created by the glaze, which gives it a rich character. The light white glaze on the surface gently depicts a motif resembling plants, painted with soft brush strokes that evoke the "wabi-sabi" aesthetic of appreciating nature. Additionally, the red clay visible beneath the glaze adds a rustic yet powerful accent to the piece, and holding it in one's hand conveys a sense of warmth.
Shino ware, cherished by tea masters and samurai during the Edo period, was highly prized as a sake vessel in tea gatherings. This guinomi, too, was likely used to enjoy sake during tea ceremonies, enhancing not only the beauty of the piece itself but also the richness of the moments shared while drinking. Its timeless allure continues to captivate people to this day.
