This plate, bearing the inscription "Da Qing Yongzheng Nian Zhi," is an example of high-quality porcelain produced at the Jingdezhen kilns during the Yongzheng period of the Qing Dynasty (1723–1735). It is crafted using the doucai technique, which involves first painting the outlines in underglaze blue, applying a transparent glaze, and firing the piece at a high temperature. Afterward, overglaze colors such as red, green, yellow, and purple are carefully added and fired again at a lower temperature. This labor-intensive method requires exceptional skill and precision.
The central design features two vividly painted red carp swimming gracefully in the water, surrounded by lotus leaves, aquatic plants, and small bubbles, all meticulously arranged. In Chinese culture, carp symbolize wealth, success, and promotion, often associated with the legend of the "Carp Leaping Over the Dragon Gate," which represents career advancement and academic achievement. The combination of underglaze blue with overglaze red, green, yellow, and purple creates a harmonious and elegant finish, highlighting the refined beauty of the piece. The rim is adorned with a blue-and-white arabesque pattern, enhancing the overall design with a sophisticated touch.
On the reverse side, the six-character inscription "Da Qing Yongzheng Nian Zhi" is written in underglaze blue, signifying the prestige of this work. The condition of this plate is excellent, with no visible chips or cracks, and the colors remain vivid while the glaze retains its original luster. As a masterpiece of the doucai technique, this piece exemplifies both technical excellence and aesthetic refinement, making it a highly valuable and collectible work of art.
