This Wucai fish and aquatic plant bowl is a masterpiece from the Chenghua period of the Ming Dynasty (1465-1487), exemplifying the characteristics of Wucai porcelain produced at the imperial kilns of the time. Chenghua Wucai is known for its delicate and refined painting style, and this piece beautifully reflects that elegance. The exterior is decorated with vividly colored fish, aquatic plants, and lotus flowers, capturing a dynamic underwater scene with remarkable liveliness. Fish motifs have traditionally symbolized abundance and prosperity, as expressed in the phrase "nian nian you yu" (may you have abundance year after year), making this bowl not only visually appealing but also auspicious. The colors—red, green, yellow, and blue—are harmoniously balanced, with a particularly soft and gentle hue characteristic of Chenghua-period porcelain. The foot is finely finished, and the base bears the underglaze blue six-character reign mark "Da Ming Chenghua Nian Zhi," signifying its imperial kiln origin. In terms of condition, the bowl shows minimal signs of use over time, with no significant cracks, chips, or restorations, making it exceptionally well-preserved. Additionally, the presence of a label from a notable collection further attests to its provenance, enhancing its value. Genuine Wucai porcelain from the Chenghua period is extremely rare in the market, and a piece of such high quality is of immense significance to collectors and scholars alike.
