This vessel exudes a warmth and a sense of history in its very presence. It is a unique piece, showcasing the masterful craftsmanship of the kiln, with glaze that seems to flow with the wisdom of ancient artisans speaking across time. At the center lies the Three-leaf Hollyhock crest, used by the Tokugawa shogunate family. In Japan, a family crest is a heraldic emblem passed down through generations, symbolizing the family's lineage and standing. Additionally, the vessel is engraved with the words 'Rikyu', 'Shogun', and 'Thank', and also features the image of a snake, which is considered a guardian deity of the household. It is speculative, but it might be conjectured that this piece was presented to the Tokugawa family during a ceremony of the Senke tea schools.
