This black Raku tea bowl is attributed to the 9th generation Raku Ryonyu (1756–1834), an esteemed potter of the late Edo period. The bowl is hand-formed with a slightly irregular yet gentle profile, covered in a thick black glaze that exhibits subtle natural variations, including fine bubbles and speckles. The interior reveals a shallow central depression with visible wheel marks and finger impressions, reflecting the tactile nature of its creation. The foot is left unglazed, exposing the clay body, and features the impressed seal “Raku” at the center. This piece exemplifies Ryonyu’s refined and robust style, and conveys the essence of wabi — a core aesthetic of the Japanese tea tradition.
