This tea bowl was produced at the Jizhou kiln during the Song dynasty (960–1279), a kiln famed for its experimental and poetic techniques in ceramic decoration. The piece is particularly notable for its rare and evocative leaf-resist design: a real leaf was placed on the surface before glazing and firing, leaving behind a vivid, ghost-like imprint with clearly defined veins and organic edges. This technique, exclusive to Jizhou ware, symbolizes the transient beauty of nature, a value deeply cherished in Song aesthetics and resonant with the principles of the tea ceremony. The interior is coated in a deep, lustrous black glaze, which contrasts dramatically with the silvery-blue impression of the leaf. The exterior glaze stops just before the footring, which is unglazed and shows the light buff-colored body, typical of Song-period construction. The condition is excellent, with no cracks or restorations, and retains a rich, natural patina. As both a functional vessel and an object of contemplation, this bowl is a quintessential example of Southern Song ceramic innovation and artistic philosophy.
