Born in Aichi Prefecture as the third son of Ishikawa Masamoto, a senior retainer of the Owari Domain. His real name was Masanori, his courtesy name was Wakei, and his pseudonyms included Yūrin, Ryokakuken, and Sengokusai. He studied under Sonoda Tadami of the Tosa school, then later under Maeda Masatada for Western painting, and Oda Kyosai for the combined Nanga and Bunjin styles. He excelled in kachōga (bird-and-flower painting) and sansuiga (landscape painting). He was a member of the Japan Art Association and was an influential figure in the Nagoya art community. He passed away in 1952 at the age of 82.
