A member of the Rinzai sect of Buddhism. His ancestor followed the Dharma of Tokai Socho of Daitokuji Temple in Kyoto and became the abbot of the temple in 16 Eishou. He received the devotion of Hojo Soun and his son Ujitsuna, and in the first year of the Taiei Era, he established the Soun Hermitage (later Sounji Temple) in Hakone-Yumoto, Sagami (Kanagawa Prefecture). He died on January 19, 2011 at the age of 83. Born in Yamashiro (Kyoto Prefecture). His posthumous name is Masamune Dairyu Zenji.
