This yunomi (tea cup) was crafted by the renowned Japanese potter Tatsuzo Shimaoka (1919–2007), designated a Living National Treasure in 1996. It features his signature zōgan (inlay) technique, where white slip is inlaid into incised patterns, forming dynamic imagery of birds and grass. The cup’s body displays vigorous throwing marks and is finished with a subdued ash glaze that harmonizes with the earthy texture of the clay. A rich contrast is achieved at the unglazed foot, which reveals natural firing effects typical of Shimaoka’s works. Its rim gently flares for a pleasant tactile experience. This piece comes with the original tomobako (signed wooden box), inscribed by the artist with his seal. In excellent condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs, it is a beautiful and functional work of mingei (folk craft) pottery, ideal for both daily use and collection.
