This is a lacquered inrō from the Edo period (1603–1868), crafted in Japan. The surface features intricate maki-e (gold sprinkled lacquer) and raden (mother-of-pearl inlay) techniques, depicting a dynamic scene of a mythical sea beast amid stylized waves. The shell inlay vividly highlights the creature’s form against the black lacquer, while swirling gold waves add rhythm and movement. Comprising four compartments, the piece retains its traditional ojime bead and cord. There are signs of wear and damage consistent with age and use, which can be confirmed in the accompanying images.
