This mask is used in the gagaku performance "Chikyū", a dance of Chinese origin that was introduced to Japan via the Korean Peninsula and has been performed since the mid-Heian period around the 11th century. It is crafted using the dry lacquer technique, in which layers of cloth soaked in lacquer are molded to create a structure that is both lightweight and durable. The mask is predominantly red, accented with black and gold tones that reflect the passage of time and ceremonial use. Its wide, open-mouthed smile and deeply carved facial features embody the spirited expression appropriate to the celebratory nature of the dance, which prays for eternal peace and prosperity. Natural weathering adds a distinctive and unique character to the piece, enhancing its singular charm.
