Shiko was born in 1941 in Yamanaka Town, Ishikawa Prefecture, Japan. After completing an apprenticeship under a lacquerware maki-e craftsman in Yamanaka, he became independent as a lacquer artist specializing in maki-e.

This Japanese lacquer natsume tea caddy features an elegant iris design rendered in traditional maki-e lacquer technique. The deep black lacquer surface provides a dramatic background for the flowing gold maki-e lines that depict slender iris leaves rising gracefully around the form. The flower is highlighted with raden mother-of-pearl inlay, which reflects iridescent colors depending on the viewing angle, creating a subtle yet striking contrast against the glossy black lacquer.

The interior is finished in vivid red lacquer, a classic feature of Japanese tea ceremony lacquerware that creates a beautiful visual contrast when the lid is opened. The composition of the iris motif wraps naturally around the rounded body, demonstrating the balance and flowing movement characteristic of refined maki-e decoration.

The layered lacquer surface and the delicate interplay between gold maki-e and shimmering raden illustrate the craftsmanship valued in Japanese lacquer art. In a tea ceremony setting, the iris motif evokes seasonal nature and adds elegance to the tea utensils arrangement. As a collectible piece, the changing reflections of mother-of-pearl and the smooth lacquer finish highlight the aesthetic depth and decorative sophistication of traditional Japanese tea ceremony lacquerware.
