This is a Japanese lacquer tea caddy (natsume) from the 20th century, elaborately adorned with chrysanthemum flowers and classical screen motifs in gold makie (sprinkled gold lacquer). The swirling cloud-like patterns and detailed floral designs are executed with superb craftsmanship, embodying the refined aesthetics associated with the Japanese tea ceremony. A touch of colored makie and possible raden (mother-of-pearl) work enhances the visual richness of the piece. The body is finished with a lustrous black lacquer that contrasts beautifully with the brilliant gold decoration. The natsume is housed in its original paulownia wood box (tomobako), which bears an inscription indicating the motif name, suggesting that it was made by a Kyoto-based lacquer artisan. The piece is in excellent condition, showing no visible signs of wear or damage. A splendid and highly collectible example of modern Japanese lacquerware rooted in traditional aesthetics.
