This lidded tea caddy, or natsume, was crafted by the Japanese lacquer artist Okamoto Yosai. It features a black lacquer ground with intricate makie (sprinkled gold and silver powder) decoration, employing the shippo (seven treasures) motif — a traditional interlocking circle pattern symbolizing harmony and eternity. Within each circular segment are finely rendered botanical motifs including foliage and flowers in gold and silver tones, demonstrating high-level craftsmanship and attention to detail. The form is smoothly rounded and fits comfortably in the hand, making it ideal for use in the tea ceremony. The interior is finished in a uniform black lacquer, maintaining a refined and elegant appearance consistent with classical Japanese tea aesthetics.
