This piece is a black Raku tea bowl attributed to Raku IX Ryonyu (1723–1799), an esteemed potter of 18th-century Kyoto, Japan. Crafted in the traditional hand-molded technique characteristic of Raku ware, the bowl features an intentionally asymmetrical lip and subtly faceted sides, creating a tactile harmony that resonates with the wabi aesthetic central to the tea ceremony. The thick, lustrous black glaze envelops the surface, exhibiting minor shifts in texture and hue that add depth and visual interest. On the unglazed foot, the telltale marks of wheel-throwing remain visible, and a seal attributed to Ryonyu is impressed beside the footring, lending further credence to its provenance. The bowl is in excellent condition, with no noticeable chips or cracks, and displays a tasteful patina that reflects its age and use. As both a ceremonial utensil and a collectible work of art, this piece stands as a refined example of the enduring legacy of the Raku tradition.
