This black Raku tea bowl is traditionally attributed to Raku IX Ryonyu (1723–1799), a distinguished potter active in 18th-century Kyoto. Crafted using the hand-molding technique characteristic of Raku ware, the bowl features an intentionally asymmetrical rim and subtly faceted body, creating a tactile harmony that resonates with the wabi aesthetic central to the Japanese tea ceremony.
The entire surface is enveloped in a thick, lustrous black glaze, with subtle variations in texture and tone that lend depth and visual interest. The unglazed foot reveals clear traces of wheel throwing, and a seal attributed to Ryonyu is impressed beside the footring, further supporting the bowl’s provenance.
