This is a valuable work by the late Ryoji Koie (1938–2020), accompanied by an original signed cloth. Koie was a renowned ceramic artist based in Tokoname, Aichi Prefecture, known for his avant-garde and experimental approach while remaining rooted in the traditions of Tokoname ware. His representative works include the Chernobyl Series, which addressed nuclear issues, and the Returning to the Earth series, which featured human face molds, reflecting his strong social messages. Additionally, his 1973 pieces Testimony—Sewing Machine and Testimony—Clock garnered attention for transcending conventional ceramic expressions.
This piece exemplifies Koie’s signature glaze work, with deep green and blue glazes flowing across the surface, creating an ethereal, water-like effect. The subtle gradations of glaze, combined with natural variations from the firing process, give the piece remarkable depth. The reverse side showcases kiln effects, with patches of red and natural ash deposits, highlighting the beauty of spontaneous glaze reactions—one of Koie’s strengths. The interplay of fire and clay produces unique textures and tones, ensuring that the piece presents different expressions depending on the viewing angle.
The condition is excellent, with no noticeable chips or damage, and the glaze maintains its original luster, effectively conveying the artist’s intended texture and aesthetic. The accompanying signed cloth and the well-preserved paulownia wood box further enhance its value as a collectible. Koie’s works are highly regarded both in Japan and internationally for their distinctive artistic vision and powerful forms. Pieces with such outstanding glaze effects are particularly sought after and are expected to gain further recognition. This piece is a remarkable work that allows the viewer to experience Koie’s artistic philosophy and passion for ceramics.
