This is a classic Ido-type tea bowl (Ido chawan) from the Korean Joseon Dynasty, likely dating from the 16th to 17th century. Ido chawan are highly prized in the Japanese tea ceremony tradition for their humble, rustic aesthetic and subtle asymmetry—qualities deeply valued in the wabi-sabi philosophy. This example features a wide, rounded body with a tall, slightly flared foot and a distinctive coarse texture. The glaze exhibits a warm beige tone with characteristic crackling near the rim and partial coverage that reveals the sandy clay underneath. The inside of the bowl is unadorned, highlighting the simplicity and natural variation of the clay and firing. These bowls were originally everyday ware in Korea but were later revered by Japanese tea masters as ideal vessels for chanoyu. The bowl is in excellent antique condition, showing no cracks or major restorations, and carries a quiet elegance that resonates with centuries of tradition.
