Tea master in the early Edo period. A disciple of Sotan. He was a disciple of Sotan, and was called Raku-takashiken. The Matsuo family was founded by Gosuke, son of Genzai Tsuji, who changed his family name to Matsuo after taking his mother's family name. Genzai was a renga master who lived until the early Tensho period (1573-92). Soji's great-grandson was Soji I (1677-1752), who later founded the Matsuo school of tea ceremony.
