This item is a blue-and-white porcelain bowl (sometsuke) believed to have been produced during the Ming Dynasty. The inscription on the bottom, "Da Ming Chenghua Nian Zhi" (Made during the Chenghua reign of the Great Ming), refers to the Chenghua period (1465–1487) and symbolizes the advanced craftsmanship of that era. However, such inscriptions were often imitated during the Qing Dynasty, and determining whether it was actually made during the Chenghua period requires further appraisal by experts.
The interior of the bowl features an elegant and graceful depiction of a phoenix. In Chinese culture, the phoenix is a symbol of peace and prosperity and is considered a highly auspicious motif. The combination of clouds and plant patterns further emphasizes harmony in the heavens and the richness of nature. This design reflects the refined aesthetic sense and advanced craftsmanship of the time. The blue-and-white coloration is vivid, and the brushstrokes are fluid and intricate, showcasing the exceptional skill of the artisans of the period.
As for its condition, the glaze is transparent and retains its gloss, which is particularly noteworthy. The surface shows no significant chips or cracks, and while there is slight wear on the rim and base due to age, the overall preservation is excellent. Additionally, the thin white porcelain reveals faint patterns when held to the light, a testament to the advanced firing techniques of the era.
This bowl is not only appealing as a tea utensil or interior decoration but also highly desirable for collectors with an interest in Ming Dynasty ceramics. Considering its historical background, the phoenix’s elegant design, and its excellent state of preservation, this bowl is a superb example of a functional and artistic antique.
