Negoro-nuri, a traditional Japanese lacquerware technique, developed during the Kamakura period (1185 to 1333) at Negoro-ji in Wakayama Prefecture. Initially crafted by training monks, this method involves applying a layer of black lacquer followed by red lacquer. Over time and with use, the red lacquer wears away to reveal the black underneath, creating a beautiful aging effect. This simple and rustic style, initially used primarily in temples, eventually spread throughout Japan.
