This is an old E-Shino (painted Shino) tea bowl from the Edo period, an exquisite piece that exudes a simple yet profound charm. Shino ware originated in the Mino region in the late 16th century and continued to be highly valued during the Edo period, especially among practitioners of the tea ceremony. E-Shino, in particular, is known for its decorative style featuring iron-painted designs of grasses and flowers. In this piece, the iron brushwork depicts such motifs with bold yet gentle strokes, creating a refined contrast against the soft white glaze. The design emerges subtly from the surface, beautifully capturing the aesthetics of wabi-sabi. The rim has a natural distortion, providing a warm, handmade feel when held. The foot is roughly carved, retaining powerful potter’s wheel marks and the earthy texture from firing, serving as strong indicators of its age and authenticity. The glaze has a fine luster overall, with minor crazing and small pinholes due to age, which enhance its character rather than detract from it. There are no chips or major flaws, and the bowl is in excellent condition. Suitable for use in tea gatherings or as a display piece, this bowl is a valuable example of Edo-period Mino ware that continues to convey the timeless beauty of traditional Japanese ceramics.
