This is a fine lacquered natsume (tea caddy) crafted by Japanese lacquer artist Motooka Seisai. Set against a deep black lacquer ground, the piece is decorated with an elegant design of pine leaves and karakusa (arabesque) motifs in shimmering gold makie (sprinkled metal decoration). As a vessel used in the tea ceremony to hold powdered green tea, the artistic nature of this piece enhances the visual experience of the tea gathering.
