Judging by its shape and the intensity of the fire marks, this tea bowl appears to be a Setoguro (black Seto) piece created in the late Edo period. Its thick yet delicate and sturdy construction fits comfortably in the hand, conveying the artisanal skills of the good old days to the present. The reddish-brown spots at the center of the bowl, a serendipitous result of the fluctuating flames, make this item a unique entity in the world. Holding this bowl, one might sense the lingering aftertaste of a tea session as it might have been savored in silence by tea masters in the Edo period some 200 years ago.
