This is a Jian ware tea bowl (known as *Jian Zhan*) from the Song Dynasty, a representative example of black-glazed pottery fired in the Jianyang kilns of Fujian Province. The entire surface is coated with a rich iron glaze, featuring beautiful oil-spot patterns that appear from the interior to the exterior of the bowl, adding a distinguished character enhanced by the natural effects of centuries-old firing techniques. The glaze flows subtly from the rim toward the interior, creating a quiet yet dynamic visual impression. The foot is carefully trimmed, offering a stable form, and the body clay is a coarse, slightly reddish material typical of the Song period, providing a pleasant, tactile sensation when held. There are no visible cracks or chips, and apart from some minor abrasions due to age and use, the condition is remarkably well-preserved. Especially around the foot, the natural glaze variations suggest that the bowl was fired in a wood kiln, capturing the spontaneous beauty of kiln transformation (*yohen*). Jian ware flourished alongside the development of tea culture, particularly the practice of powdered tea whisking during the Song Dynasty, and this bowl exemplifies that historical legacy. It is not only a valuable artifact but also a highly appreciated work of art. This piece is highly recommended for collectors, tea practitioners, and anyone with an interest in Chinese ceramics or Song Dynasty culture.
