**Origin of the Kiln:**
In the late Edo period, under Murata Seifu's Five White Policy (rice, salt, paper, wax, and white porcelain), artisans were summoned from Arita to start a kiln in 1817 as a government-sponsored project. It flourished as Obatayaki, a blue and white porcelain kiln, during the Meiji period, exporting even to mainland China. With the advent of railways, it evolved into Hagiyaki pottery to differentiate from other regional porcelains.
**Shoukeian-kiln**
The name "Keishouan" was inspired by the desire to create works surpassing the scenic beauty of the site in Hagi City where the seventh-generation, Kaneta Keien, established his workshop. The kiln is currently run by the 8th generation Keien.
