This teabowl, created in the Song dynasty at the Jizhou kiln, is a fine example of Daihai Tenmoku, renowned for its beauty and rarity. The term Daihai Tenmoku refers to a specific type of glaze pattern that originated at Jizhou kilns during the Song dynasty. The distinctive design of this piece resembles the intricate patterns found on the shell of a hawksbill sea turtle, lending the work its evocative name. These patterns emerge naturally as a result of chemical reactions in the glaze during high-temperature firing, making each piece unique and unmatched in its aesthetic charm. This uniqueness has captivated collectors and connoisseurs for centuries.

The most striking feature of this Daihai Tenmoku teabowl is the golden-yellow, amber, and brown patterns spread across the blackish-brown glaze. The radiating motifs on the interior evoke a sense of nature’s dynamism, while simultaneously exuding a refined artistic elegance. The same glaze pattern extends to the exterior, creating a balanced and harmonious design. The unglazed foot reveals the raw clay body, providing insight into the crafting techniques and kiln conditions of the era.

In terms of condition, this teabowl is exceptionally well-preserved. There are no significant chips or cracks, and the glaze retains its lustrous sheen, exhibiting a natural patina developed over centuries. Such an excellent state of preservation is exceedingly rare for a piece of this kind, enhancing its value not only as a tea utensil but also as a work of art.

Daihai Tenmoku serves as a testament to the innovative spirit of the Jizhou kilns during the Song dynasty. This teabowl can enrich the aesthetic experience of tea ceremonies while also standing as a highly valued object for display and appreciation. In international markets, it is particularly sought after by collectors and art enthusiasts due to its unique glaze patterns and rarity. This piece is a timeless artifact that bridges the worlds of art and functionality, embodying the essence of Song dynasty craftsmanship and artistic sensibilities.
