Tokuda Yasokichi III
Born in Komatsu City, Ishikawa Prefecture, into a family of Kutani ware kiln masters, the third Tokuda Yasokichi inherited the ancient Kutani glazes from the first Yasokichi and studied modern ceramics under his father, the second Yasokichi, who was a direct disciple of Kenkichi Tomimoto. Unsatisfied with the traditional Kutani colored porcelain techniques, he dedicated himself to extensive research and experimentation. From the Kutani Gosai (five traditional Kutani colors) passed down in the Tokuda family, he eliminated red, which lacks glass components, and focused on blue, purple, green, and yellow. He successfully created over 200 intermediate hues and developed a unique gradation technique, leading to the creation of his signature style of vivid colored porcelain known as Yosai.
The vibrant and innovative works crafted by the third Tokuda Yasokichi received high acclaim in the world of modern ceramics. In 1997, he was designated a Holder of Important Intangible Cultural Property (Living National Treasure) for his contributions to saishiki-jiki (colored porcelain).
