This lobed dish is attributed to the Ru kiln of the Song dynasty. While it holds significant historical and cultural value, certain condition issues can be observed. Although the characteristic celadon glaze of the Ru kiln is applied across the entire surface, signs of aging and usage, such as uneven glazing and small areas of peeling, are evident. In particular, minor dents and abrasions on the surface indicate the passage of time. As such, the condition cannot be considered flawless.
The Ru kiln, one of the Five Great Kilns of the Northern Song dynasty (960–1127), produced pieces for imperial use, making surviving examples extremely rare. This dish features the distinctive celadon glaze of the Ru kiln, with a soft, pale bluish-green color that is particularly striking.
The lobed rim, shaped to resemble flower petals, reflects an elegant design and showcases the delicate craftsmanship of the period. Additionally, the body of the dish exhibits minimal warping, maintaining a well-balanced form that highlights the advanced ceramic techniques of the time.
On the underside, the dish bears typical "spur marks" (support marks) found on Ru kiln ceramics from the Song dynasty. These marks are remnants from the firing process, where supports were used to elevate the vessel, and they serve as important indicators of the piece’s noble, imperial origins.
While there is a label stating “Latner's Collection,” no definitive information regarding this collector could be confirmed. Despite its condition issues, the historical background and cultural significance of this piece remain undeniable. For enthusiasts of ancient ceramics and collectors who value historical importance, this dish remains an alluring and highly desirable artifact.
