This is an exquisite antique Japanese Hiranatsume (flat tea caddy) featuring a stunning gold lacquer exterior. The outer gold ground radiates a refined elegance, while the interior reveals a stark, beautiful contrast with its deep, glossy black lacquer (Kuro-urushi) finish.
The highlight of this Chado (tea ceremony) utensil is the hidden charm inside the lid—a meticulous maki-e lacquer painting of "Karako" (Chinese children). In Japanese tea culture, this style is known as "Mikaeshi Maki-e" (inside-lid design), intended to delight guests when the host opens the caddy during the ritual presentation (Haien). Karako is a traditional auspicious motif symbolizing prosperity, happiness, and family lineage, making this piece perfect for celebratory gatherings or themed tea gatherings.
The brushwork and craftsmanship display incredible rhythm and detail, capturing the playful expressions and lively movements of the children. This authentic Urushi lacquerware shows natural signs of aging, adding a beautiful patina and a sense of historical depth that tea practitioners highly value. This antique Natsume serves as an excellent conversation piece between the host and guests, enriching the spiritual atmosphere of Chanoyu. Highly recommended for collectors of Japanese tea ceremony utensils, green tea matcha storage, and high-quality antique lacquer art.
