This antique Japanese bamboo tea scoop (Chashaku) was crafted during the late Edo period by Shinoda Yoshitaka (also known as Kashitsu or Sabee), a wealthy sake brewer and cultured connoisseur from Gifu, Mino Province. Yoshitaka studied waka poetry under Toyama Mitsuhiro, practiced the Matsuo-ryu school of tea ceremony, and left behind notable travel writings such as Miyako no Tabi Nikki.
The tea scoop features a deep, lustrous amber patina developed over centuries, highlighting the natural beauty and character of the bamboo node. Its poetic name (Mei), "Chiyo no Masago," inscribed on the bamboo tube along with "Shirakawa" inside the cap, carries a profound poetic and geological story. In Kyoto, the weathered granite from Mount Hiei flows down the Shirakawa River as fine sand known as "Masago." Combining "Chiyo" (a thousand generations) with "Masago" (countless grains of sand) symbolizes eternal prosperity and longevity. This rich historical and poetic imagery makes the tea scoop an exceptional piece for conversation during traditional tea ceremony gatherings.
