This story unfolds in the cold depth of winter, with a single tea bowl taking center stage at the tea gathering. As you hold it in your hands, your eyes are drawn to the subtle warm reddish hues emerging from the rich black glaze—a vivid memory of flames and glaze intersecting in the kiln. Its classic cylindrical shape warmly cradles the tea, retaining heat and offering gentle comfort to your guests amidst the crisp winter air. Turning the bowl toward its base (kodai), an impressed Raku seal mark stands quietly, bearing witness to the powerful presence of artisan craftsmanship. Handed down as a work created by Raku Ryonyu, ninth-generation master of the Raku family, this vessel invites rich discussion during item appreciation (haiken). The journey begins the moment it is unveiled from its inscribed wooden box (tomobako), where the lid bears an inscription attributing the Black Raku tea bowl to Ryonyu, complete with a tea master's stylized signature (kao). As host and guest share reflections on the beauty created by layered glazes and the noble history carried across generations, this tea bowl weaves an unforgettable narrative into your tea ceremony.
