Otagaki Rengetsu was a Buddhist nun who lived through the late Edo to Meiji periods, maintaining a pure aesthetic despite a life marked by a singular and often tragic destiny. This piece is a kofuku chawan (small tea bowl) of "Rengetsu-ware," which she hand-pinched herself and inscribed with her own waka poetry using a needle-carving technique. The greatest charm of this work lies in its supple, organic form, as if the warmth of her fingertips has been directly transformed into shape.

Beneath the soft, milky-white glaze, delicate kannyu (crackle patterns) spread quietly, and the "tea-seasoned" patina developed over many years lends the piece a sense of deep affection and dignity. The brushwork of the waka poetry encircling the vessel's surface is as light as wildflowers swaying in the breeze, yet each carved character harbors a spirituality akin to a prayer. The powerful spiral tool marks (known as uzu-kodai) seen on the foot highlight the rustic texture of the hand-kneaded clay, creating a masterful contrast with the delicate refinement of the inscribed poetry.

In the tea room, its petite size fits gently in the palm, allowing the user to share in the "tranquility of daily life" that Rengetsu so cherished each time tea is whisked. More than just an antique, this is a piece that symbolizes spiritual richness and stays close to the owner's life. The soft luster created by the overlapping glaze and the beauty woven from its one-of-a-kind distortions invite the viewer’s heart into a state of serene calm.
