Otagaki Rengetsu was a Buddhist nun who lived through the late Edo to Meiji periods, maintaining a pure aesthetic despite a life marked by a singular and often tragic destiny. This piece is a kofuku chawan (small tea bowl) of "Rengetsu-ware," which she hand-pinched herself and inscribed with her own waka poetry using a needle-carving technique.
