Glass production in the Satsuma domain began in 1846 during the rule of the 27th head of the Shimazu family, Shimazu Narioki. The renowned glass artisan Shimoto Kamejiro was invited from Edo, and a glass production kiln was established near the Nakamura Pharmaceutical Hall to manufacture chemical bottles and other glass items.
In 1851, when the 28th head, Shimazu Nariakira, became the domain lord, the industry saw rapid development. This led to the creation of the artistic glassware known as "Satsuma Kiriko," which was crafted with a view toward international trade.
One significant episode during this golden age was Nariakira’s introduction of advanced glass coloring techniques, which allowed for the creation of deep red and other vibrant hues that became iconic of Satsuma Kiriko. These innovations, combined with intricate hand-cut designs, made Satsuma Kiriko highly sought after by collectors and traders alike.
