This is a Tenmoku tea bowl believed to have been crafted during the Song Dynasty at the Jian kiln in Fujian Province, China. Jian kiln's Tenmoku bowls are renowned for their deep black glaze, achieved by applying a thick iron-rich glaze over an iron-rich dark brown clay body and firing at high temperatures.

The allure of this bowl lies in the natural patterns and luster that emerge within the jet-black glaze. During firing, kiln transformations can cause the glaze to crystallize, resulting in exquisite patterns known as Yohen Tenmoku or Oil Spot Tenmoku. Additionally, the bowl's design features a flared rim and a small, tight foot, enhancing the color and aroma of the tea while providing excellent stability when held.

Such Tenmoku tea bowls have profoundly influenced Japanese tea culture and are closely associated with Zen philosophy. This bowl, embodying the advanced techniques and aesthetic sensibilities of Song Dynasty artisans, continues to captivate people across time.
