This is a beautiful set of two vintage Japanese Mashiko ware Yunomi tea cups, capturing the essence of the Japanese Mingei (folk art) movement. The most striking craft characteristic of these cups is the bold and dynamic "Yubigaki" (finger-wiped) technique. By using the artisan's own fingers to wipe away the wet iron glaze, rhythmic diagonal patterns are created, showcasing a beautiful balance between human touch and natural materials.

The contrast between the rustic, earthy texture of the clay and the deep, glossy amber and dark brown glazes creates a mesmerizing "Yukei" (glaze landscape). Each cup features a slightly unique organic form born from wheel-throwing, offering a comfortable weight and warmth when held in your hands.

For Western collectors or tea enthusiasts wondering about its practical use, these versatile vessels are perfect not only as traditional green tea cups or matcha-related teaware, but also as small bowls (Mukou付け/Kobachi) for serving appetizers or desserts, elevating any dining experience. They also make a sophisticated statement piece for display on a collector's shelf or a tea ceremony room.

Mashiko pottery was deeply revitalized by the legendary potter Hamada Shoji, who championed the beauty of everyday utilitarian objects. While the specific maker remains unknown, the historical design, the rhythm of the brush/finger work, and the rich tradition of Mashiko kiln are vividly alive in this set.

Please note that this vintage item does not come with a wooden box (Tomobako), but it is in excellent condition with no visible cracks or chips, ready to bring Japanese historical craftsmanship into your daily life.
